UNESCO has approved Cao Bang Geological Park as a global geological park.
The approving was passed at 18h (local time) on April 12th 2018 at the 204th session held in Paris. Accordingly, the Cao Bang geological park is recognized according to the criteria: size and landscape, local management and participation, economic development, education, protection and conservation. The three main objectives of the global geo-park are to preserve, educate and promote the local economy through geological tourism.
About 300 km north of the capital city of Hanoi, Cao Bang Global Geo-park is located in north-eastern Vietnam, covering an area of over 3,000 square kilometers. Located in the park are 6 districts of Ha Quang, Tra Linh, Quang Uyen, Trung Khanh, Ha Lang, Phuc Hoa and a part of the area of Hoa An, Nguyen Binh and Thach An.
It is home to more than 250,000 people from nine ethnic groups. According to statistics, the whole area has about 215 historical and cultural relics are ranked, including 3 special national monuments.

Previously, Dong Van stone plateau, Ha Giang was recognized as a global geological park in October 2010. This event raises the number of global geo-parks in Southeast Asia to five: Langkawi – Malaysia (2007), Dong Van – Vietnam (2010), Batur – Indonesia (2012), Gunung Sewa – Indonesia (2015) and The latest is Cao Bang – Vietnam.
Prior to this accreditation meeting, there are 127 global geological sites worldwide in 35 countries recognized by UNESCO. This is a title for a natural area with clear administrative geographic boundaries, containing an internationally-recognized set of geological heritage that has scientific, educational and aesthetic value. Besides, there are other values of biodiversity, archeology, history, culture and society.
